Ricardo Cazares Valencia was born August 25th to Luciana Cazares Valencia and Guillermo Cazares in what was then, the dusty little town of Galeana, Chihuahua, Mexico where there were more horses than cars in 1942, the year of his birth. As a boy, he would rather be out riding his horse or shooting bottles than attend class. If his mother found him ditching, she would grab him by his ear and take him to school. Although he was deaf in his later years, he never lost his knack for recounting adventures that began after his mother's death when he was 14 years old. He vividly remembered the train he took and jumped off in different parts of the country to find work, ending up in Mazatlan, hungry and eager to work. Adventures throughout his youth such as camping with another adventurer in the Sierra Nevada mountains with no money in his pocket and not being able to sleep with the howling of wolves and sounds of animals in the brush; or sleeping under the stars in California while working on the railroad tracks. The darkness of his temper, that those close to him knew all too well, was toned down by age but not enough. The sharpness of his mind allowed him to use his phone as his computer to do research on herbs and their use. His tenacity was evident until the end where his strong will kept him alive a little longer than his body was prepared for. He passed away January 10, 2025, in his home in Canutillo, Texas.
