Jose A. Lobato, age 88, passed away peacefully on September 4th, 2023 at the Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home in El Paso, Texas. Jose, known for his dedication to his country and witty sense of humor, was born on July 7th, 1935, in Conejos, Colorado to Teodoro Antonio Lobato and Ruby Lobato. He went on to star in baseball and football throughout high school in Antonito, Colorado. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and embarked on an adventurous 20-year career, including years of service in the Vietnam War.
Stationed in numerous locations including the United States, Europe, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, Jose earned the rank of Technical Sergeant. He excelled as a Jet Aircraft Mechanic and Inspector to the point where he supervised Presidential Aircraft. After retiring in 1974, he applied for and was hired by the U.S. Department of Justice, selflessly serving his country in supervisory roles for an additional 20 years. He entered as a Border Patrolman and quickly transitioned to the Immigration and Naturalization Service where he processed political prisoners, notably in Cuba, Panama, Mexico, and Canada. He earned numerous decorations throughout his military and government careers; with one of his proudest moments being documented as an historic image. In fact, a photo of Jose and his brother Guilberto chatting on an airfield in Vietnam can be found in the National Archives. He retired in the 1990s and enjoyed hobbies including spending time with loved ones, tending his beautiful yard, golfing, and exploring the amenities of Fort Bliss.
Jose is survived by his son Lorenzo and his wife Becki; daughter Maria; grandchildren Blaise, Ashley, Adam, and Skylar; great-grandchildren Sunny and Ava; brother Pedro Lobato; and numerous nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Helene of 60 years, parents, and siblings. We wish to extend our gratitude to the staff at Ambrosio Guillen Texas State Veterans Home and Tender Care Hospice. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to any organization that supports veterans. Although he is missed by many, he is now embraced in heaven by cherished family, friends, and pets. We are incredibly proud of his service and will commemorate his illustrious life. Jose will be enshrined and honored at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
