Sylvia Chavira was born in El Paso, Texas on December 10,1959. She was the third of 6 children to mother , Antonia Galvan and father, Manuel Galvan. Sylvia’s early childhood was spent in El Paso, TX with her siblings : Ramon Galvan, Barbara Galvan, Yvonne Torres, Diana Gutierrez, and Juan Galvan (deceased). They lived on Bassett street , where she attended Beall Elementary School. 

The Galvan family  moved to California in hopes of a better life. Sylvia attended Wasco High School and always dreamed of studying to become a teacher. 

At such a young age, Sylvia has always been a hard worker. She helped her parents work in the labor fields of California, picking crops and fighting for justice during the Labor and Civil Rights'  Movement. The Galvan family helped Civil Rights' leader, Cesar Chavez, continue his legacy by fighting for justice as migrant workers. 

Sylvia grew to have a love for children as she helped raise and care for several of her nieces and nephews. 

Sylvia met the love of her life and exchanged vows with her husband , Raul Chavira Sr. on March 16, 1985 in El Paso, Texas. Sylvia and Raul started their beautiful family with daughter, Valerie Chavira (1986), and son, Raul Chavira Jr. (1988). 

Sylvia made it her mission to instill her Catholic values and morals to her husband and two children. She was a devout Catholic who remained faithful in every aspect of her life. Sylvia was a Marianist, a profound follower of the  Virgin Mary.   She instilled the love of God in her children which will guide them through the rest of their lives. 

Sylvia was a loving mother who did everything to ensure that her children would succeed in life and to set their goals high. She not only set the expectation high for them, but led by example. Throughout her children’s early education , Sylvia was named PTA Volunteer of the Year at Mission Valley Elementary, Marian Manor Elementary, and Valley View Middle School .  During this period , Sylvia obtained her High School Equivalency Diploma from the University of Texas at El Paso. She went on to fulfill her childhood dream of going to college and began her higher education at El Paso Community College in 2006. Sylvia was very proud of her children for both becoming educators in her honor. Sylvia worked with children in Region 19 for many years leaving her mark as a nurturer and natural educator to many lives up until her retirement in 2010. She dedicated her retired life to tend to her health and continued being the foundation of her family. As her health conditions arose , Sylvia devoted her conditions as a faithful Martyr to the Lord. 

Sylvia will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Sylvia had the heart of a servant and was faithful to helping the needy  , especially her beloved Perez  family in Juarez . They always held a special place in her heart. Sylvia was full of life and wore her heart on her sleeve. She loved to listen to music and dance the night away at family gatherings. She was known for her famous dance moves to her favorite music. Sylvia enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends by laughing and making life-lasting memories . There was never a dull moment when anyone was around our beloved Sylvia. 

Sylvia is survived by her husband , Raul Chavira Sr.; daughter, Valerie Chavira; and son, Raul Chavira Jr. She leaves behind her parents , Manuel and Antonia Galvan, and siblings : Ramon Galvan, Barbara Galvan, Yvonne Torres , and Diana Gutierrez. May she rest in eternal peace. 



Sylvia Chavira nació en El Paso, Texas, el 10 de diciembre de 1959. Era la tercera de 6 hijos de madre, Antonia Galván, y padre, Manuel Galván. La infancia temprana de Sylvia transcurrió en El Paso, TX, junto a sus hermanos: Ramón Galván, Bárbara Galván, Yvonne Torres, Diana Gutiérrez y Juan Galván (fallecido). Vivieron en la calle Bassett, donde asistió a la Escuela Primaria Beall.

La familia Galván se mudó a California en busca de una vida mejor. Sylvia asistió a la Escuela Secundaria Wasco y siempre soñó con estudiar para convertirse en maestra.

Desde muy joven, Sylvia siempre fue una trabajadora incansable. Ayudó a sus padres a trabajar en los campos de labor en California, recolectando cultivos y luchando por la justicia durante el Movimiento Laboral y de Derechos Civiles. La familia Galván ayudó al líder de los Derechos Civiles, César Chávez, a continuar su legado luchando por la justicia como trabajadores migrantes.

Sylvia desarrolló un amor por los niños, ya que ayudó a criar y cuidar a varios de sus sobrinos.

Sylvia conoció al amor de su vida y intercambió votos con su esposo, Raúl Chavira Sr., el 16 de marzo de 1985 en El Paso, Texas. Sylvia y Raúl comenzaron su hermosa familia con su hija, Valerie Chavira (1986), y su hijo, Raúl Chavira Jr. (1988).

Sylvia se dedicó a inculcar sus valores y moral católicos a su esposo y sus dos hijos. Era una católica devota que se mantuvo fiel en todos los aspectos de su vida. Sylvia era una marianista, una seguidora ferviente de la Virgen María. Inculcó el amor a Dios en sus hijos, lo cual los guiará durante el resto de sus vidas.

Sylvia era una madre amorosa que hacía todo lo posible para asegurarse de que sus hijos tuvieran éxito en la vida y establecieran metas altas. No solo estableció expectativas altas para ellos, sino que también dio el ejemplo. A lo largo de la educación temprana de sus hijos, Sylvia fue nombrada Voluntaria del Año de la Asociación de Padres y Maestros en la Escuela Primaria Mission Valley, la Escuela Primaria Marian Manor y la Escuela Secundaria Valley View. Durante este período, Sylvia obtuvo su Diploma de Equivalencia de la Escuela Secundaria de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso. Luego cumplió su sueño de la infancia de ir a la universidad y comenzó su educación superior en El Paso Community College en 2006. Sylvia estaba muy orgullosa de que sus hijos se convirtieran en educadores en su honor. Sylvia trabajó con niños en la Región 19 durante muchos años, dejando su huella como cuidadora y educadora natural en muchas vidas hasta su jubilación en 2010. Dedicó su vida de jubilada a cuidar de su salud y seguir siendo el pilar de su familia. A medida que surgían problemas de salud, Sylvia los consideraba como una fiel mártir del Señor.

Sylvia será profundamente extrañada por su familia y amigos. Sylvia tenía el corazón de una servidora y era fiel en ayudar a los necesitados, especialmente a la querida familia Pérez en Juárez. Siempre ocuparon un lugar especial en su corazón. Sylvia estaba llena de vida y mostraba sus sentimientos abiertamente. Le encantaba escuchar música y bailar toda la noche en reuniones familiares. Era conocida por sus famosos movimientos de baile con su música favorita. A Sylvia le encantaba estar rodeada de familiares y amigos, riendo y creando recuerdos duraderos. Nunca había un momento aburrido cuando nuestra querida Sylvia estaba cerca.

Sylvia es sobrevivida por su esposo, Raul Chavira Sr .; su hija, Valerie Chavira; y su hijo, Raul Chavira Jr. Deja atrás a sus padres, Manuel y Antonia Galván, y a sus hermanos: Ramón Galván, Bárbara Galván, Yvonne Torres y Diana Gutiérrez. Que descanse en paz eterna.
