Jack Luther McCarty

October 31, 1933 – May 24, 2024

Jack Luther McCarty, a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2024, at his home in Anthony, Texas, surrounded by his loving family and friends. He was ninety years old.

Born on October 31, 1933, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, to William Earl and Lena Mae McCarty, Jack's life was marked by love, dedication, and a deep sense of duty. His family eventually settled in El Paso, Texas, where Jack would forge his legacy. In 1956, he married Mary Oneita Rainer, just before being shipped off by the United States Army. Together, Jack and Mary raised three wonderful children. Jack enjoyed a long, fulfilling career with the El Paso Electric Company and received honorable recognition in 1964 for resuscitating a colleague.

Jack was known for his larger-than-life presence and embodied the essence of a true gentleman. He valued family, honor, loyalty, and respect above all else. Epitomizing the American cowboy, he was rugged, reliable, resourceful, and resilient. His word was his bond, and his handshake was as good as any written contract. Jack had an incredible knack for repurposing items and believed in minimizing waste. His love for nature was profound, and he took great pride in building a bird and small animal sanctuary on the “185,000 acres of gazing land” just outside his back gate in Anthony, Texas.

Jack was preceded in death by his former wife Mary (Rainer) McCarty; his parents, Lena Mae and William Earl McCarty; his brothers: William E. (Rowdy) McCarty and wife Rita, Blair McCarty, Tom L. McCarty and wife Patricia, Clifford D. McCarty, George C. McCarty; and sisters: Lou Amy (Tootie) Durham and husband Robert, Sarah J. (Jayne) Turner and husband Parker, Jimmie Juan Mender and husband Red, Earlena Watts and husband J.C., Bonnie F. Pickens and husband Norris, Cherry A. (Corky) Larreau and husband Hank, Hazel McCarty, as well as his son, Jack Luther McCarty, Jr.

He is survived by his sisters Dixie L. Boyd, Maxie J. King, and Linda M. (Wendy) Jack and husband Bruce; his daughter-in-law, Kay McCarty; his son, Joe Raye McCarty and his wife Sarai; his daughter Michel Tinnin and her husband David; his grandchildren: Jack (Jay) McCarty, Laurie Garcia, Janea Torres, Justin McCarty, William Tinnin, III, and Sarah McCarty; his lifelong friend, Phillip Hardy; as well as twelve great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Per Jack’s request, there will be no funeral services. Instead, a celebration of his life will be held in October, with details to be announced closer to the date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages you to take extra time to love and appreciate your loved ones, watch an episode of Gunsmoke, or stop to admire a beautiful sunset, in Jack's honor.
