1942 – 2021
Richard K. “Doug” Bowman, age 78, went peacefully into the presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 3, 2021, at his home in El Paso, Texas, after a lengthy illness.
Doug was born on May 5, 1942, in Medicine Lodge, Kansas to parents John Kin and Rachel Fitch Bowman. He grew up in Medicine Lodge and married his high school sweetheart, Rita Schenosky, in 1959.
After graduation from Medicine Lodge High School, Doug joined the United States Navy, and was stationed in Hawaii, Japan, the Philippines and Viet Nam, before being honorably discharged. Doug and Rita then returned to Medicine Lodge, where he worked for twenty years as a contract oilfield pumper. In 1990, they moved to El Paso, Texas, and began a new career as team drivers for Ormsby Trucking, traveling throughout the United States until Doug was promoted to Safety Director of the El Paso terminal, where he worked until he retired.
A committed Christian, Doug was an active member of Life Church, El Paso, Texas, serving in various capacities. He especially enjoyed being part of the Greeting Team, making members and newcomers feel welcome. He was also a faithful volunteer at the Hands of Hope ministry, distributing food and clothing to those in need. Taking great pride in maintaining a beautiful yard, Doug was skillful in landscaping and design. He was interested in the lives and well-being of his neighbors and friends, and was always available to lend a helping hand.
Doug is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Rita; his two daughters, Jennifer (Bob) Frith of Montevideo, Uruguay, and Jacqui Lax of El Paso; his four grandchildren, Bobbi (Pablo) Pereyra of Cordova, Tennessee, Brandi (John) Carrano of Barcelona, Spain, Trae’ Lax and Kaitlyn Vandine of El Paso; his eight great-grandchildren; his brother, Jack (Dorothy) Bowman of Tekoa, Washington; his sister-in-law, Barbara (Les) Whisman of Alva, Oklahoma, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother and sister-in-law, Don and Geneva Bowman, of Medical Lake, Washington.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 13, 2021, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM, followed by a Celebration of Life service at San Jose Funeral Home (10950 Pellicano Drive, El Paso, Texas). A memorial service will also be held in Medicine Lodge, Kansas at a future date.
