Long time El Paso resident Norma “Nanny” Teresa Strickland passed away peacefully at home on June 14, 2021, at the age of 85. She was born in El Paso, TX on December 4, 1935, and was raised in San Francisco, CA. She moved to Galveston, TX with her mother and stepfather, where she studied at John Sealy Hospital/UTM for Radiology.
She valued and was very proud of her degree. In 1967 she moved back to El Paso with her three daughters, mother, and stepfather and started her career with the Turner, Craige, and Ekery Practice. After the passing of Dr. Branch Craige II she worked with Dr. Malek Nazmi until Dr. Branch Craige III graduated medical school. She then assisted with the opening of his practice and stayed working faithfully with him until her retirement. She loved all her patients, as they did her.
In her spare time, she enjoyed listening to music, crocheting, crossword puzzles, and played a mean game of BINGO. Her family was always everything to her, and she was very proud of anything they did. She is preceded in death by her mother, Mary Leonora Araya, her stepfather, Albert Araya, and her father, Roberto Fuentes. She is lovingly survived by her daughters, Dianne R. Strickland, Donna L. Ribera, Denise A. Silva and son-in-law Jaime A. Silva; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, and extended family who all loved her very much.
Services will be held on Saturday, September 4, 2021 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at San Jose Funeral Home East. A Rosary will be held in her honor at 10:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your favorite Animal Society.
