Adored mother, wife, grandmother, and aunt Maria Garza (Mama/Nina), 76 passed away peacefully after medical complications due to the onset of Alzheimer’s Disease on June 2, 2021.
Maria was born in Chihuahua, Mexico on June 6, 1945 to Roberto Antonio Martinez and Consuelo Estrada Martinez. She married her loving husband Alonzo Ponce Garza, Jr. on November 27, 1965 in El Paso, Texas. They had two children, Enrique Alonzo Garza and Gilbert Garza.
Maria is preceded in death by her parents Roberto and Consuelo Martinez, her brother Fernando Antonio Martinez and her younger sister Rosa Irma Tafoya.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years Alonzo P. Garza, and sons Enrique and Gilbert Garza, her older half-brother Roberto Rodriguez. and younger brother Mario Sergio Martinez. Grandchildren – Noah Alonzo Garza, Cristian Garza, Elissa Garza, and Matthew Garza, Sasha Garza, Brandon Patterson, Kyle Patterson, Trevor Patterson and KayLynn Patterson. Nieces – Veronica Vasquez, Elizabeth Pulido, Yvonne Heady, Martha Nevarez, Lisa V. Martinez, Joselyn Martinez and Patricia Martinez. Nephews – Jose Manual Tafoya, Luis Roberto Tafoya, Fernando A. Martinez and Sergio Martinez. – Daughters-in-law Sherri Lynn Garza and Anna Garza – and Grand-Daughter-in-law Kristen L. Garza. – Close family members – Victor Miramontes, Susana Castanuela, Irma Miramontes, Beatrice Contreras, Irene Ortiz, Francisco Puga, Richard Garza, Yolanda Silva, Maria Elena Perez, Irma Calderon, and Norma Rodriguez.
Beautiful and loving Maria (Mama) will be forever cherished by her family and friends. May she finally be at peace in the loving arms of Lord, Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mother Mary.
Memorial service will be Thursday, July 1, 2021 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with recitation of the rosary at 6:00 p.m. at San Jose Funeral Home-East. Memorial mass will be Friday, July 2, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Stephens Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, 5200 Fred Wilson Ave. El Paso, TX.
