Our dear and devoted Maria “Cookie” Chavez Baca, 88, passed away November 14, 2022. Maria was born July 4th, 1934, in El Paso, Texas. Maria was a dedicated wife, mother, and grandmother. Maria spent her life displaying her love for her husband and for her family. Cookie was known for her love of listening and dancing to music. She lived in El Paso, Texas her whole life. Although she bravely battled Alzheimer’s for 14 years she fought to live in the moments of happiness with her husband and family. She is preceded in death by her husband Jose Cortez Baca, they were married 68 years. Maria is also preceded in death by her parents Abdon and Maria Chavez, as well as her sisters Antonia C. Castillo, Amelia C. Juarez, Cecilia C. Gomez, Candelaria C. Gutierrez, and Ester Chavez and her brothers Ramon Chavez, Manuel Chavez, Roberto Chavez, Jose Chavez, and Francisco Chavez. Maria is survived by her daughters Martha Baca Garcia (Arturo Garcia), Rosanna Baca, Cecilia Baca Reyes (Francisco S. Reyes, deceased), Nora Jaramillo (Luis Jaramillo), Margarita Gonzales (Tim Gonzales), and Melissa Soto (Mario Soto). She had 14 Grandchildren, Orlando Sapien, Joseph Sapien, Samantha Sapien, Mindi Ramirez, Lyssa Ramirez Chan, Liana Reyes, Priscilla Reyes, Francisco Reyes, Jr., Deanne Jaramillo Witt, Daniel Jaramillo, Matthew Gonzales, Autumn Soto, Seth Soto, and Sebastian Soto. Maria also had 19 Great-grandchildren and 1 Great-great-grandson.

Visitation will be held at San Jose Funeral Home East, 10950 Pellicano Dr., El Paso, Texas on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, in chapel A with a public viewing from 4:00 PM to – 8:00 PM with the Rosary Vigil at 7:00 PM. Arrangements for mass and burial are pending for a later date.
