Juan Hernandez, age 67, passed away Sunday, September 19, 2021 after a long and difficult illness. He was a lifelong resident of El Paso and was proudly raised in the Segundo Barrio. Johnny, as he was affectionately called, graduated from Bowie High, class of 1973. He then served briefly but proudly in the U.S. Army. Aftewards, he earned his Bachelor’s in Education from UTEP, class of 1978. He went to attend UT at Austin. Upon his return from Austin, he taught Math at Riverside High School. Juan worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 25 years at different stations in El Paso. He was always ready to assist his beloved USPS.
Juan is preceded in death by his parents, Cirilo Hernandez and Angelita Aquayo Hernandez and his sister; Estela Lopez. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Rose Mata-Hernandez, by their son: John Robert: his daughter Rebecca Hernandez Rojero (Armando), and his beautiful granddaughter, Sarahi Naomi Rojero. He leaves behind three sisters: Maria de Jesus Jimenez, Cecilia Gonzalez (Richard), and Rosalia Hernandez. He will be missed by his many brothers-i-law, nephews and nieces.
Juan’s passion in life was music and traveling. He enjoyed family trips. Juan mastered both the guitar and piano and continued playing music until the very end. He wasn’t blessed with a great voice but he made up for it with contagious enthusiasm. He always traveled with his guitar and was ready to play a ranchera or oldie at any family gathering. His zest for life and his smile will be greatly missed.
Visitation will be at San Jose Funeral Home, 10950 Pellicano, on Thursday, September 30, 2021 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm with the Rosary at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 2301 Zanzibar, t 9:30 am on Friday October 1, 2021. Burial will follow at Fort Bliss National Cemetery with Military Honors.
