Ismael “Duro” “Lego” Legarretta

Ismael Legarretta, 80, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on June 19, 2022. Ismael was born on January 25, 1942 to Mariano and Monica Legarretta in Ft. Hancock, Texas. Ismael was a proud 1961 graduate of Ft. Hancock High School. Ismael proudly served his country by fighting in the Vietnam War in the U.S. Army. Upon his return from Vietnam, Ismael married his high school sweetheart, Maria Almanza, on July 3, 1966. They were happily married for 55 years. Ismael was a devout Catholic. Ismael worked for Fort Bliss Civil Service for 31 years as a warehouseman. Upon his retirement from Ft. Bliss, Ismael worked at Scottsdale Elementary School with the Ysleta Independent School District for 10 years. Upon his retirement from the school, he could not sit idle. He worked at Kmart part-time for 9 years before he retired for good. Ismael loved to cheer on his beloved Dallas Cowboys and watch sports. He coached his daughter as she grew up playing basketball and softball. Ismael enjoyed going to see his daughter coach and granddaughters play softball year-round as well as other sports. No matter the weather he was there! Ismael loved to go and dance the night away with his beautiful wife Maria for any occasion. Ismael is preceded in death by his parents, sister Carmen Jimenez and brother Israel “Ralo” Legarretta. Ismael is survived by his wife Maria Legarretta, son David Legarretta, daughter Laura Legarretta, granddaughters Natali and Clarissa Legarretta, Alexa Legarretta and Celeste Deck and grandson Evan Deck, brothers Mariano Legarretta, Daniel Legarretta and Samuel Legarretta. Goddaughters Bernice Amador, Letty Betancourt and Zina Legarretta Villanueva. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends who became family. Pallbearers will be: Michael Legarretta, Sammy Joe Legarretta, Kelley Legarretta, Danny Legarretta Jr., Richard Deck and Ruben Prieto. Honorary pallbearers are Sam Ortiz, Tommy Lopez and Evan Deck. Ismael was a hard working and loving husband, daddy and grandpa and will be greatly missed.
Services for Ismael will be on June 30, 2022 at San Jose Funeral Home, 10950 Pellicano, El Paso, Texas. Viewing will be 9 am – 12 pm with rosary being held at 11 am. Church mass will follow at 12:30 pm St. Pius Catholic Church, 1050 N. Clark, El Paso, Texas. Burial will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery at 2 pm.
A heartfelt thank you to Tender Care Hospice and RN Claudia Oaxaca for the amazing care they showed Ismael and the family during this difficult time. Also thank you to RN’s Rafa Ibarra and Jose Gutierrez and physical therapist Valeria Garcia for the care of Ismael during home health. Also a special thank you to Dr. Maria C. Aloba, Dr. Teresa Pinaroc, Dr. Carlo M. Hatem, Dr. David Dobrin, Dr. Adaeze Onaha and El Paso Oncology Center for their amazing care.
