On November 25, 2019, the almighty God called the name Ernest Powell, Jr., affectionately known as “EJ” by friends and loved ones, and he answered the call.
Ernest, Jr. was born January 8, 1942 to the late Ernest Powell, Sr. and Helen Powell. Ernest, Jr. was baptized at Asberry Methodist Church, in White Castle, LA. He attended St. Paul Baptist Church in White Castle, LA, where he met Esther Jackson. Ernest, Jr. and Esther attended public schools together, and later became high school sweethearts. Ernest, Jr., a star High School Football Athlete, graduated from Iberville High School located in Plaquemine, LA. He then enlisted in the United States Army. Ernest served two tours in Vietnam, and one tour in Germany during his military career.
Ernest was married to his High School Sweetheart, Esther Jackson, his wife of 57 years. And of this union were born four children, Victoria, Patricia, Ernest Charles, and Milton.
Ernest, Jr. leaves to cherish his memories, his wife Esther J. Powell, and 4 children: Victoria Powell Gadson, Patricia (Thomas) Jefferson, Ernest Charles (Zina) Powell, Sr., and Milton Jerome Powell, 7 grandchildren: Delessia Latoya Kincade, Chrissalle Deanne Jefferson, Karren Elizabeth Gadson, Bernard (Amber) Gadson, JR., Ernest Charles Powell, Jr., Timantre Monroe Powell, and Guthria Colbert Powell, 5 great grandchildren: Jayden Dimitri Kincade, Camille Skye Kincade, Tyrone Sharod Billingslea, Tinia Simone Billingslea, and Cynthia Nicole Gadson, 2 nephews: Walter C. Powell, II and Gregory Powell, and sister-in-law: Lillian Powell Robins, as well a host of nieces, nephew, cousins, and friends.
Ernest, Jr. was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Powell, Sr. and Helen Powell, his brother, Walter C. Powell, Sr., his grandson, Kevin Lemont Jefferson, his great granddaughter, Tamia Nychelle Jefferson, and his grandson-in-law, Erick Charles Kincade.
