Lt Col Don Travis Reed, USMC, Retired, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, at the age of 76. He is survived by Diane Marshall Reed, his wife of 55 years, daughters Shawna Queen and Shay Reed-Hulburt, and grandchildren Travis, Carrie, Kaitlyn, Christopher, and Karsyn. Lt Col Reed was born in TX but grew up in the Marine Corps. Upon graduation from The Virginia Military Institute in 1964, he received a regular commission in the Marine Corps. His USMC career spanned 27 years, primarily in Air Defense. Early in his career, he served a combat action tour in Vietnam, which was followed by multiple leadership tours of duty stateside and overseas. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal with V, and Army Commendation Medal. Lt Col Reed’s last tour of duty was as the USMC Representative to the
Commanding General of Fort Bliss, TX. He retired in October 1988. Lt Col Reed led a very active retired life. He was a member of the El Paso Downtown Lions Club for many years and the American Legion. He also had many hobbies, including maintaining his physical fitness in the USMC tradition, hunting, hiking, fishing, and taking summer trips to the Eastern Sierra Nevada. Lt Col Reed kept his positive, never-give-up attitude to the end of his life, in spite of his battle with cancer that began Summer 2015. He fought the battle tenaciously, with unwavering support from family, friends, and the El Paso VA, and with excellent care by MD Anderson CC and Texas Oncology medical staff. The memorial service for Lt Col Don Travis Reed will be at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, TX, on Sept 6, 2019 at 10 AM.
